Danaid is an artwork inspired by Metamorphoses of Hypermnestra, eldest of the Danaides. It was originally conceived as part of the series The Gates of Hell but was not included in the final version of that work. Signed A. Rodin on the front of the base. Foundry mark Alexis Rudier Fondeur Paris along the base. Mounted on the stone stand. Francois Auguste Rene Rodin was a French sculptor generally considered the founder of modern sculpture. He was schooled traditionally and took a craftsman like approach to his work. Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, and deeply pocketed surface in clay.
