Lot 0323: A RARE ANCIENT MACE HEAD STONE, EGYPT NAQADA I

Seller: 9B907 (1130)

Highly collectible piece. Egypt, probably pre-Dynastic Chalcolithic Naqada I period, circa 3000 BCE. A disc-shaped mace head made of a beautiful Indurated Limestone or, a rich on calcite marble, with a drilled center hole and a polished surface with geometric pattern carvings; the piece has a very pleasing weight in the hand and was likely mounted on perishable material in its original use. Items shaped like this one have been found in Naqada I, 4400 to 3500 B.C tombs of both males and females; they were later replaced by more piriform mace heads. They may be an indication of the authority of the buried person, as they were in later times, but little is known about this early period. Provenance: Private Collector New Jersey, 2023.
