The second: Object: Karikosu Sonja The Overdrawn Loser from the series: Myodensu Juroku Rikan, Sixteen Wonderful Considerations of Profit. The third depicts a portrait of a kabuki actor, role: Shino Inuzuka, plant: Red knotweed, play: Hakkenden Uwasa no Takadono. The fourth: Role: Yorikane Ashikaga Takao no momiji, plant: Japanese Maple, character suggested by plant: The courtesan Takao, play: Probably Date kurabe Okuni kabuki. Both from the selected Brother pictures of 30 Chosen Trees and Flowers series. In this series, bust portraits of kabuki actors are paired with trees and flowers. Each is inscribed with Calligraphy in the print. Utagawa Kuniyoshi was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He was a member of the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshis subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals.
