A pair of sterling silver candle holders by Frank W. Smith silver company, each shaped like a stylized seashell, with a spiraling design and a scalloped rim. Each is marked and numbered on the bottom. Frank W. Smith, a silversmith educated by his uncle William Durgin, established his own sterling silver flatware business in 1886. The company flourished quickly, leading to the completion of a factory in 1892. Smith’s hiring of Arthur J. Stone, a Scottish silversmith, broadened the firm’s capabilities to include both handcrafted and machine made items. Despite changing ownership, the business continued operations until 1958.
